The Court of Appeal for Serious Crimes in Athens concluded another trial related to illegal OPEC subsidies, finding 13 people guilty.
The case concerned the illegal benefit of agricultural aid worth around 250 thousand euros, related to declarations and applications for areas in the Serres region, in northern Greece.
The court unanimously accepted the proposal of the European Prosecutor in charge of the case, Evgenia Kyvelou, and found 13 of the 25 defendants who appeared in court guilty.
After reviewing the evidence and investigative materials, the defendants were found guilty, as appropriate, of fraud, complicity in fraud, false certification, and incitement to false certification.
The defendants were granted the mitigating circumstance of regular legal life. As a result, the sentences ranged from 5 to 26 months in prison, suspended for three years. The court also ordered each of the convicted persons to pay 1,200 euros in court costs.
According to Greek media, a total of 32 people were initially sent to trial in this case. Seven of them chose the criminal negotiation procedure, returning the funds they had benefited from the subsidies, which led to the conclusion of the criminal proceedings against them through this legal form.
