"Heat dome" arrives in Europe, meteorologists warn of drastic increase
Meteorologists warn of record temperatures in summer

The Severe Weather Europe (SWE) meteorological service has announced that a heat dome is developing over most of Europe, which in the coming days could bring record temperatures for this time of year.

In many areas, temperatures will rise by around 15 degrees Celsius. In Spain and Portugal, temperatures between 35 and 39 degrees Celsius are expected.

The warm air mass will gradually expand north and east, so afternoon temperatures in most of Western Europe, including the United Kingdom, France and Central Europe, will reach between 25 and 29 degrees Celsius.

Temperatures are expected to be up to 15 degrees higher than the multi-year average for the end of May.

How is the heat dome created?

In the coming days, warm and very warm air will penetrate from North Africa towards Western Europe and part of Central Europe.

At the same time, a broad anticyclone, an area of high atmospheric pressure, will affect most of the continent.

Such a situation usually brings more stable, sunnier and warmer weather, with less cloud development and less chance of precipitation.
The term “heat dome” is used when hot air remains for a long time over a certain area, usually under the influence of an anticyclone and a special distribution of air circulation in the upper layers of the atmosphere, the so-called “omega blockage”.

High pressure pushes air toward the ground, where it heats up even more, while clear skies and long hours of sunshine amplify the rise in temperatures. However, not every period of warm weather is a heat dome.

Experts warn that some regions could experience the first truly hot days of 2026.
