Greek media reports that thermal cameras have recorded temperatures in the city, on a day where air temperatures were predicted to reach 35 degrees C.
The camera captured a temperature of over 100°C on a street in the center of Athens next to a truck.
Meanwhile, in the engine of a machine that is stopped at a traffic light, the camera shows it rising to almost 400°C
The heat wave is expected to worsen in the coming days, with temperatures in Athens reaching 43 degrees Celsius.
High temperatures in the neighboring country will continue until at least next Friday, July 19.
