Crete

The Greek island of Crete is being "suffocated" by African dust. The Directorate of Public Health of the Region of Crete has informed the citizens of the measures they must take to deal with Sahara dust.

Media in the country report that the concentrations of particles in the air recorded so far have increased.

The University of Crete and the Technical University of Crete inform that according to predictive models "the average daily concentrations of PM10 for today, Saturday and Sunday 19.05.2024 will fluctuate at average levels. (51-75 µg/m3) due to the intense phenomenon of dust transport from the Sahara."

For this reason, adults with breathing problems, those with heart disease, and children with breathing problems are recommended to limit any vigorous physical exercise, especially if done outdoors.

Also, citizens have been recommended to wear high protection FFP2, N95 & KN95 masks, as they can protect citizens who are active in nature.

In addition, taking measures to improve indoor air quality is also recommended.
