Passengers planning to travel to or from Italy on September 26 should prepare for possible flight delays and cancellations, due to a strike announced by unions in the air transport sector.
The 24-hour strike has been called by the CUB Trasporti and USB unions, two of the largest for workers in basic sectors in Italy.
The cause is wages and working conditions, which, according to unions, are unacceptable.
Ground operations will also be affected by the strike. Baggage workers employed by the company Assohandlers will protest from 10:00 to 14:00, while drivers at Milan airports will be on strike all day.
Security staff at Cagliari Elmas Airport, in Sardinia, will also take part in the strike for the entire day.
Pilots and cabin crew from low-cost airlines Volotea and Wizz Air Malta will also join the 24-hour strike, protesting low wages and poor working conditions.
The strike does not mean that all flights will be canceled. The Italian Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC) has announced that flights scheduled in the time slots 07:00–10:00 and 18:00–21:00 will operate normally, as they are considered guaranteed services.
Outside of these times, cancellations and delays are possible. Travelers are advised to contact airlines prior to departure and plan additional travel time.
"At Linate, Malpensa and Bergamo airports, companies have refused to compensate workers for their rights. It is time to pay what they are owed," said a statement from the strike organizers.
According to them, "passenger and freight traffic is increasing, but the exploitation of workers is deepening, while their rights and wages are decreasing."
The organizers have also emphasized that the strike also has a solidarity character: "we are also mobilizing for the Palestinian people and the victims of genocide, as well as to express support for the Global Sudum Flotilla, the humanitarian ship led by Greta Thunberg, which was hit by a drone off the coast of Crete."
Another 24-hour national strike in the rail sector will start at 9:00 PM on October 2 and will last until 9:00 PM on October 3. On October 13, new strikes are planned at the airports of Rome (Fiumicino), Pisa and Florence.
Meanwhile, Swissport Italia employees at Milan Linate will strike again on October 29th.
