US President Donald Trump has stated that he wanted to award himself the Congressional Medal of Honor after a visit to Iraq in 2018 during his first term.
"I decided to go to Iraq. I was incredibly brave. So brave in fact that I wanted to give myself the Congressional Medal of Honor," Trump told his supporters, speaking at a rally on the economy in Georgia.
"I said to my people, am I allowed to give myself the Congressional Medal of Honor? And you know, I've given so many to guys who are really brave. I mean, they come in and they're missing arms, they're missing legs. Their stories are so incredible. And I said it's a little bit excessive if I give myself one," he continued, reports the Telegraph.
President and First Lady Melania Trump made a surprise visit to US troops at Al Asad Air Base on December 26, 2018 during his first term as president.
Nearly a year later, he visited American troops in Afghanistan.
Trump joined his predecessors, former presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush, in visits to both Iraq and Afghanistan during their terms in office.
The US withdrew its military forces from Afghanistan in 2022 under the leadership of former President Biden.
Meanwhile, military bases in Iraq continue to operate.
"One day I'll try it. I'll test the law," Trump declared.
