The French aircraft carrier "Charles de Gaulle" and its escorts have begun deploying to the North Atlantic and the Baltic Sea, the Ministry of Defense announced today.

The move comes in a context of instability due to Russia and following pressure from US President Donald Trump for the US to take control of Greenland.

The ship, which departed on January 27 from Toulon and participated in the large "Orion 26" exercise conducted by France, continues its "Lafayette 2" mission in the North Atlantic, before sailing towards the Mediterranean.

On February 25, it is expected to arrive in the Swedish port of Malmö, where it will stay for several days, which is happening for the first time, according to the Swedish Ministry of Defense.

During its deployment, this French air force is expected to participate in NATO's "Baltic Sentry" mission. This mission aims to prevent threats to underwater infrastructure following the cutting of cables suspected to have been orchestrated by Moscow.

It will also participate in NATO's Steadfast Dart exercises in the Baltic Sea, Neptune Strike, as well as Cold Response, a multinational exercise hosted by Norway.

This development, which has long been planned, comes at a time when NATO wants to launch its Arctic Sentry mission aimed at strengthening security in the Arctic, in a move particularly intended to appease Washington.

Russian submarines from the Northern Fleet or the Baltic Fleet regularly operate in this area.

The French aeronautical group includes the aircraft carrier and its aircraft, as well as various escort and support vessels, such as frigates, a supply ship and an attack submarine. In addition to its important operational capabilities, it also serves as a means of strategic and diplomatic communication.
