The campaign team of former US President and current presidential candidate Donald Trump has announced that the campaign was hacked and accused Iranian actors of being involved in the theft and distribution of sensitive documents.
They did not provide specific evidence of Iranian involvement; however, their claim comes a day after Microsoft released a report detailing foreign efforts to interfere in the upcoming US presidential election.
It is reported that the report gives an example in which Iranian military intelligence sent "a spear-phishing email to a high-ranking official of a presidential campaign from a compromised email account of a former senior adviser".
Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung blamed "foreign sources hostile to the United States" for the attack.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for the National Security Council said in a statement that it takes any report of foreign interference "extremely seriously" and condemns efforts to undermine trust in US democratic institutions.
When asked about the Trump campaign's claim, Iran denied involvement, although it is not the first time it has been accused of meddling in a country's election.
The Iranians have previously been suspected of hacking campaigns against enemies in the Middle East and beyond.
"We do not give any credence to such reports," the Iranian government said.
"The Iranian government does not possess or harbor any intent or motive to interfere in the United States presidential election," she added.
