Novi Pazar Citizens' Assembly, letter to Erdogan not to be lied to by Vučić...
The rapprochement between Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan is being viewed with suspicion and discontent in Sandzak, where civil society representatives accuse Belgrade of exploiting the Turkish leader's support to consolidate power in an election year.
Following Vučić's visit to Ankara and the announcement of Erdogan's visit to Serbia, the Novi Pazar Citizens' Assembly announced today that it has sent a letter to the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, to show that diplomatic relations and economic cooperation should not be used to artificially increase the assessment of the regime that "implements systemic repression in Sandžak."
In their reaction, citizens highlight the contrast between the official rhetoric of strategic partnership and the reality on the ground. “ While in official meetings there is talk of friendship and investment, in Novi Pazar we experience economic isolation, pressure on young people, interference in religious life and deliberate political division ,” the statement says.
According to them, for more than three decades the region has not seen major investments that would guarantee employment and development, while poor infrastructure keeps it disconnected from the rest of the country. They accuse the authorities in Belgrade of deepening divisions within the Bosniak community and interfering in religious and political institutions to weaken unity.
In this context, the rapprochement with Erdogan is seen as a calculated political move. Critics argue that Vučić seeks to capitalize on the Turkish president's image and influence among Muslim voters, creating the impression of international support that strengthens his domestic positions.
For many analysts, the cooperation between the two leaders, who are often characterized as authoritarian figures, raises questions about the democratic direction of the region. According to them, when diplomacy is used for electoral purposes, it risks replacing the debate on real reforms with political spectacle.
While Belgrade presents the partnership with Turkey as pragmatic and economic, in Sandzak there is a prevailing concern that joint visits and statements may serve more to consolidate power than to solve the region's structural problems. / Pamphlet
