For the first time after 49 days of bloodshed and destruction, yesterday in the Gaza Strip, in southern and northern Israel, there was no more noise of bombers, no drones, no rocket explosions, no artillery fire, nothing was heard, the country is back in a "deafening" silence. From 7 am (local time), as predicted, the four-day ceasefire between Israel and Hamas went into effect.
A short time later, Israeli armored vehicles were rolling out of northern Gaza, while trucks with humanitarian aid and fuel were entering the Palestinian strip from the southern border with Egypt at Rafah.
The most important development of yesterday was the exchange of the first prisoners between the warring parties. Around 4:00 p.m., 13 Israeli Hamas hostages, along with 10 Thai workers and a Filipino who had also been captured by the Islamist group, were handed over by Hamas, the Red Cross and sent to the Egyptian side of the border to be picked up by the Israeli army.
Their first destination was Hajerim Air Base, in southern Israel. After being examined by mental health experts and an initial medical check-up, they were transferred to hospitals, where they were received by their relatives.
In the Red Cross
At the same time, the Israeli army handed over to the Red Cross 24 women and 15 teenagers held in Israeli prisons on minor charges, such as throwing stones at soldiers or uploading videos of Palestinian armed organizations. In the four days of the ceasefire, if all goes well, a total of 50 of the 237 Hamas hostages and 150 of the 7,200 Palestinians held in Israel, all women and children, are expected to be released.
Hamas has said it is willing to release all civilian hostages in exchange for an extension of the ceasefire and the release of three times as many Palestinian prisoners. However, he clarifies that a separate negotiation, on a completely different basis, will be needed for the release of the soldiers he managed to capture on October 7 and insists on the release of all Palestinians from Israeli prisons, including key figures of Palestinian organizations.
The ceasefire is temporary, Israeli and Gaza officials say, leaving open the possibility of an extension.
In the first hours of the agreement's implementation, the ceasefire was generally respected by both sides, with few complaints of individual violations. Tensions flared on the main Salahadin road, which connects southern and northern Gaza, where two Palestinians were killed and 11 wounded by Israeli fire as they tried to move into the besieged north despite the ban.
Although the Israeli army had released leaflets in southern Gaza warning displaced Palestinians not to try to return during the ceasefire, some took the risk yesterday, trying to reach their homes.
From Tel Aviv, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallad stressed that the ceasefire will be short and that military operations will continue. "There will be a short pause and then we will continue the operations with all our forces until we achieve our goals, the suppression of Hamas and the release of all the hostages," the Israeli official said after a meeting with his Italian counterpart.
Even the representative of the press of the armed wing of Hamas, Abu Ubaydah, spoke of a "temporary truce". Ubaydah called for "escalation of the conflict on all fronts of the resistance". However, both sides left open the possibility of extending the ceasefire for up to 10 days, during which 100 hostages and 300 Palestinians would be released.
No confidence in Netanyahu

A Financial Times report reveals that Israeli soldiers on the Gaza border, mostly women, after reviewing electronic surveillance footage, alerted their superiors weeks before the fateful October 7 that Hamas was preparing to blow up parts of the border wall and attacked targets in southern Israel. But the senior intelligence officer at the southern sector command dismissed the warnings as "fantasy scenarios".
A poll conducted on behalf of the Maariv newspaper estimates that if elections were held tomorrow, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's ruling coalition would collapse, securing only 41 seats in Parliament, compared to the opposition's 79. 52% of respondents prefer opposition leader Benny Gantz as prime minister, while Netanyahu is limited to 27%.
From the Rafa border point, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez stressed that the temporary ceasefire is not enough and that a permanent ceasefire is needed. Earlier, Sanchez had met with Egyptian President Abdelfattah Sisi, with whom he discussed the Palestinian political solution based on two states. At the two men's joint press conference, Sisi argued that the future Palestinian state could be demilitarized, with a temporary presence of NATO, UN and Arab forces that would provide security guarantees for both sides.
The hostages return home to their loved ones

Mishun Musa was sentenced to 15 years in prison in 2015 for stabbing an Israeli soldier in Jerusalem during Ramadan. That same year, at the age of 16, Mara Bakir was arrested after being shot in the arm by a police officer who then accused her of trying to stab him. While in hospital she was sentenced in absentia to eight years in prison, which was expected to end this month, and a fine. Both were returned to Gaza yesterday, while the oldest prisoner released is 59-year-old Hana Barghouti, who was arrested in September in Jerusalem for unspecified "security reasons".
The teenagers on the list include only 14-year-old Abdel Rahman Fakhri, who was arrested last month on charges of arson, and 16-year-old Abdel Rahman Ahmed, who was arrested the same month for throwing stones. / Adapted "Pamphlet" from "Reuters" and "Associated Press"
