Referendum loss puts Giorgia Meloni in final test of staying in power in Italy

Italy is facing another major political test for Giorgia Meloni's government as citizens vote in local elections for mayors and city councils in hundreds of municipalities across the country. The election process is being seen as the most significant test of the governing majority after the loss of a referendum on judicial reform.

Polling stations reopened on Monday after the first day of voting on Sunday, in a process involving some 749 Italian municipalities. Over six million citizens are eligible to vote to elect new local administrations in around 700 municipalities, including Venice, as well as fifteen provincial capitals.

Preliminary data shows that voter turnout was lower than in previous local elections. According to local reports, Sunday's turnout was around 46.5%, compared to 50.1% in the previous elections.

In municipalities with more than 15 thousand inhabitants, the run-off will take place on June 7 and 8. On the same dates, voting will also take place in 149 municipalities in Sardinia, while the second round there is scheduled for June 21 and 22.

Voters are electing local administrations in important cities such as Venice, Reggio Calabria, Salerno, Messina, Prato, Arezzo, Lecco and Agrigento, among others. The competition in these centers is seen as a direct indicator of the current balance of political forces in the country.

This electoral process comes at a delicate moment for Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The defeat in the referendum on judicial reform in March weakened the government's political position and opened discussions about the real level of support the right-wing coalition enjoys among the electorate.

The result of the local elections is expected to provide important signals about the stability of the governing majority ahead of the 2027 general elections. At the same time, the vote will also show whether the progressive opposition has the ability to build a united alternative against the center-right.

Opposition coalitions appear fragmented in some areas, with different alliances from one city to another. In some municipalities, the Azione party has chosen to cooperate with the center-right, while in other cities the center-left appears divided.

One of the most closely watched contests is taking place in Venice, where the center-left is seeking to regain control of the city after a decade of center-right administration under Luigi Brugnaro. In Reggio Calabria, the situation is the opposite, as the center-right is attempting to take control of the city hall after terms in office under democrat Giuseppe Falcomatà.

Complicated political scenarios are also emerging in Crotone and Salerno, where civic candidacies and divisions within the progressive camp are affecting local electoral balances.

The results in these cities are expected to have great political weight, as they could directly influence the national political climate and the strategies that parties will follow leading up to the next parliamentary elections.
