Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez has stated that Venezuelan authorities have no information about the whereabouts of President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores, describing the situation as extremely serious.
In a statement released this Saturday, Rodríguez said the government has sought proof that the president and his wife are alive, amid conflicting reports and dramatic developments in the country.
The statement comes after reports of large-scale attacks in several areas of Venezuela and claims by the United States that Maduro and his wife have been captured and taken out of the country.
Venezuelan authorities have not officially confirmed whether the president is under the control of US forces, while the lack of information about his fate has increased uncertainty and political tensions at home and abroad.
Trump announced Saturday morning that the US had carried out a "large-scale attack against Venezuela" and that President Nicolas Maduro and his wife had been captured and removed from the country.
Several explosions were reported by witnesses in the capital, Caracas, starting around 2 a.m. local time. Videos posted on social media showed large explosions and what appeared to be a U.S. military aircraft flying low over the city.
