A powerful earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale has shaken the southern Mexican state of Guerrero, causing alarm and mass evacuations in several areas of the country.
According to Mexico's National Seismological Service, the epicenter of the earthquake was near the town of San Marcos, not far from the Pacific coastal resort of Acapulco. The tremors were also felt in Mexico City, where the seismic warning system was activated.
As a result of the alarm, hundreds of people were forced to leave buildings, while authorities announced that so far there have been no reports of material damage or casualties.
The earthquake also interrupted Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum's first press conference, which was being held when the sirens went off. The president and journalists were immediately evacuated from the premises.
