
Etna is in a new phase of volcanic activity, as a new lava flow has been observed within the Valle del Bove in recent hours.
The eruption began on the afternoon of January 1, 2026, when lava flowed from a vent at an altitude of 2,000 to 2,100 meters. The lava flowed towards the lower parts of the valley, reaching up to 1,500 meters.

The first impressive images, including a video by photographer Emilio Messina, show lava slowly descending into the Valle del Bove, a natural basin that acts as a protective embankment during Etna's eruptions.

According to the competent authorities, there are no populated areas threatened, while the activity is constantly monitored by scientists. So far, no damage or problems with infrastructure have been reported.
