Some residents reported water gushing out of swimming pools due to the powerful tremors, while several tall buildings shook for several seconds. The epicenter of the quake was about 17.2 km from Mandalay city, which has a population of about 1.2 million, according to the USGS.
Meanwhile, authorities in the region are closely monitoring the situation, assessing the impact of the earthquake and warning citizens of the possibility of aftershocks. Citizens have been advised to remain vigilant and follow safety instructions to avoid further risks.
Bangkok police said the number of possible victims was not yet known, while local media reported that about 43 workers were missing after the collapse.
