Belgian authorities are investigating a shocking case in which 41 women were sexually abused and raped after drinking drinks laced with drugs.
As The Guardian reports, three managers of the bar in the Belgian city of Kortrijk have been identified as the main suspects in the case.
Investigators believe the three managers discussed the plans with each other. The prosecution said a total of five people were arrested on Wednesday and Thursday in connection with the investigation. Two of them appeared in court on Thursday. Two others are still being questioned, while the fifth was released after being interviewed by authorities.
All of them are suspected of rape, sexual assault and illegal administration of harmful substances. Police officials suspect that the girls' drinks were laced with drugs, including ketamine, a general anesthetic used for medical purposes due to its hallucinogenic effects.
“Forty-one victims have already been identified for the period between December 2021 and December 2024 and the investigation is continuing for the possible identification of others,” Griet De Prest, a spokeswoman for the West Flanders prosecutor’s office, said on Thursday.
"The men are suspected of rape, sexual abuse and illegal administration of harmful substances," the prosecutor's office said.
"The young women were offered alcoholic beverages and after consuming them they woke up the next morning, dazed in an unfamiliar bed or in their own bed, with clear signs of sexual abuse," said Tom Janssens, another spokesman for the prosecutor's office.
Belgium's Interior Minister Bernard Quentin denounced the acts as "unacceptable" and criticized how easily accessible ketamine was in the country.
"Women should be able to go out safely, wherever they want, whenever they want," he said.
