The king was taken to hospital on Thursday afternoon in connection with his cancer treatment and as a result has had to "regrettably" postpone his Friday engagements, Buckingham Palace has announced.
His Majesty was due to travel to Birmingham for a full day of activities and meetings, but this has now been postponed on medical advice as palace aides seek to protect and prioritise his ongoing recovery.
A Buckingham Palace spokesman confirmed that the King had now returned to Clarence House, his London residence, following his trip to the hospital.
"Following planned and ongoing medical treatment for cancer this morning, The King experienced temporary side effects that required a short period of observation in hospital. Accordingly, His Majesty's afternoon engagements have been postponed. He has now returned to Clarence House and as a precautionary measure, acting on medical advice, tomorrow's agenda will be rescheduled. His Majesty would like to apologise to anyone who may have been inconvenienced or disappointed as a result of this decision ," a palace spokesman said.
Charles is due to travel to Italy in just over a week and palace sources have said that remains the plan. Palace sources have described the king's hospital visit as a minor setback.
