Cole Thomas Allen, the suspect in the attack on United States President Donald Trump, has appeared in federal court in Washington. He faces three criminal charges.
From the courtroom, the judge read charges that include: attempting to assassinate the US president, use of a firearm during a violent crime, and transporting firearms in interstate commerce with the intent to commit a crime.
During the hearing, Allen was informed of his procedural rights, including the right to remain silent and the right to a preliminary hearing. Asked by the judge if he understood the charges, he replied: “Yes, sir.”
One of the main charges, that of attempted assassination of the president, was made public for the first time during this hearing.
The court hearing took place in a packed courtroom, as the suspect appeared dressed in his blue prison uniform. He took the oath by raising his left hand and then answered the judge's questions about his identity and education, stating that he holds a master's degree.
Magistrate Judge Matthew J. Sharbaugh also read his right to legal representation. Allen will be represented by public defenders Tezira Abe and Eugene Ohm.
The proceedings are expected to continue with the other phases of the legal process, while the case remains under review in the US federal system.
