Over the weekend, two of Benjamin Netanyahu's main domestic rivals announced they would join forces to defeat the Israeli prime minister in national elections in October.
The political union of Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid, two relatively moderate figures, could "mark the end of Netanyahu," military analyst Michael Clarke declared. It could also affect the course of the Iran war and the broader regional conflict.
"The problem for Netanyahu is that he has nothing to offer Israel except continued war. It was Bennett who said that the era of war must end. Now we must have an era of reconstruction. So they are promising some kind of new approach - what that would be, we don't know. They have to win first. But that could change this Iran war subplot a lot. If we get to October and we are still involved in this war with Iran, then that could prove very important ," said Clarke, who added that this perspective could also have an impact on the current situation in Lebanon.
