US President Donald Trump on Monday called on ABC television to fire late-night host Jimmy Kimmel after the latter made a joke about First Lady Melania Trump during a skit related to the White House Correspondents' Association dinner.
" Jimmy Kimmel should be fired from Disney and ABC immediately ," Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform, calling the joke a " disgusting call to violence ."
A few hours earlier, Melania Trump had also hinted that the moderator should lose his job for the same comments. In a statement on the X platform, she said that Kimmel's monologue "is not humor" but "deepens the political illness in America."
" People like Kimmel should not be able to enter our homes every night to spread hatred ," she said, adding that the moderator "hides behind ABC" and that the television network should take a stand.
Kimmel's comments came on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on Thursday, days before a security incident at an event that saw President Trump, Melania Trump and other officials evacuated. In his monologue, Kimmel said the First Lady had "a glow like a widow in waiting," a phrase that drew strong reactions.
He also made another joke referring to a previous Trump meme, where the president was portrayed as a religious figure.
White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt called Kimmel's comments "completely disturbing," adding that such rhetoric could incite unstable individuals to violent acts.
