Rubio: US will not accept agreement without guarantees against nuclear weapons

Iran is "serious" in trying to reach a deal with the United States, but any agreement must prevent the development of a nuclear weapon.

This was stated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in an interview with Fox News.

" I think they are serious about getting out of the difficult situation they are in ," Rubio said, referring to the deteriorating economic conditions in Iran.

He cited inflation, difficulties in paying salaries and the continuing impact of sanctions. “ All the problems that Iran had before the start of this conflict are still present, and most have worsened ,” he added.

According to him, any agreement must contain clear guarantees: " We must make sure that any agreement... definitively prevents them from running towards a nuclear weapon at any moment ."

Iran and the US held talks in Islamabad on April 11 but failed to reach an agreement to end the war that began on February 28. The negotiations followed a two-week ceasefire brokered by Pakistan on April 8, which was later extended.

Meanwhile, tensions in the region remain high. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz reacted to Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem's refusal to hold direct negotiations with Israel by warning of escalation.

" If the Lebanese government continues to protect itself under the wing of the terrorist organization Hezbollah, the fire will break out and engulf Lebanon ," Katz said, according to a statement carried by AFP. His comments were made during a conversation with the UN envoy for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert.

Earlier, Qassem had stated that talks with Israel do not benefit Lebanon and called on the government to retreat from what he called a "grave mistake," which he said was leading the country towards instability.
