On Saturday evening, chaos reigned in the ballroom of the Washington Hilton Hotel where Trump's dinner with correspondents was taking place, when gunfire from outside sent panicked attendees rushing to hide under tables and chairs.
However, there was one exception among them: Michael Glanz, an agent for the Creative Artists Agency and a guest at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, also attended by Donald Trump, who remained seated, continuing to eat his salad unperturbed, according to the New York Times.
In a brief interview on Sunday, he said he was unfazed by the intensity of the moment and preferred to watch what was happening. “I’m a New Yorker,” he said. “ We live every day with sirens and intense activity. I wasn’t scared. There were hundreds of Secret Service agents moving quickly between tables and chairs, and I wanted to see what was happening.”
The image of his reaction was broadcast by CNN and quickly made the rounds on social media, where he was nicknamed "salad man."
He said many people asked him why he didn't follow the others. "A lot of people said to me, 'Why didn't I lie down on the floor? Everyone at your table and in the room was on the floor,' " he noted.
He gave his explanation: "First of all, I have a back problem. I couldn't fall, and if I did, I would need help to get up. And secondly, I'm extremely careful about hygiene. There was no way I was going to lie down in my new tuxedo on the dirty floor of the Hilton. It wasn't going to happen."
