Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called on European authorities to speed up investigations into suspected fraud with European Union agricultural subsidies, while at the same time proposing an institutional reform for the functioning of the government.
According to his statements on Monday, Mitsotakis suggested that after the 2027 elections, ministers should not simultaneously hold the mandate of an MP. The proposal comes at a time of increased pressure on his government, following developments in the investigation launched by the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO).
The issue deepened after two ministers and a deputy minister resigned, forcing a cabinet reshuffle. The EPPO has also requested the lifting of the immunity of 11 MPs as part of the investigation.
Mitsotakis stated that, although the cases do not have the same gravity, none of the MPs involved is accused of personal financial gain. He called on the EPPO to act swiftly after the lifting of parliamentary immunity and to clearly determine criminal responsibility.
He stressed that the MPs involved have suffered personal and political consequences and should be able to defend themselves fairly.
On the other hand, the main opposition party PASOK reacted by strongly opposing the prime minister's proposal. Its spokesman, Kostas Tsoukalas, described the initiative as politically motivated and insufficient to address issues of transparency and accountability regarding the use of EU funds.
PASOK called for early elections, arguing that this is the only way to restore public trust and political stability in the country.
