Attack in Kiev, Merz: Almost zero chance of a Putin-Zelensky meeting

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz joined European voices in strongly condemning the Russian air strikes that hit the Ukrainian capital last night. At a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron in Bregançon, Merz declared that after this massive escalation, it seems “clear” that there will be no meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the meeting that was proposed after the Trump-Putin summit in Alaska about two weeks ago.

Merz explained that he condemned the attack "in the strongest terms" and described the attack on the European Union office in Kiev as evidence of the dishonesty and violence of the Russian regime.

He also assessed that the recent Russian acts are unacceptable and harm any efforts for dialogue and peace in the region.

The Russian airstrike, one of the largest since the start of the war, killed at least 21 people, including four children, and caused significant damage to more than 20 sites, including the European Union and British Council buildings in Kiev.

The damage caused by this attack and Merz's warnings highlight that any hope for the renewal of dialogue between Putin and Zelensky is at risk, while diplomacy is increasingly focused on the search for new sanctions and strong measures to stop Russian aggression.
