Senior lecturer in oceanography at the University of Southampton, Dr. Simon Boxall said that a large earthquake does not necessarily mean there will be a large tsunami.
Meanwhile, tsunami waves have reached Washington state, the US National Weather Service said.
Waves from the 8.8 magnitude earthquake first hit Hawaii, USA. Waves also hit California, with "rapid and destructive growth" reported. Then, on the US west coast, Washington state was hit.
Tide gauges recorded tsunami waves in both La Push and Westport - both west of Seattle on the coast. NWS Seattle stressed that people should stay away from the coast and water for now.
