Pope Leo XIV has granted emergency aid of 100,000 euros to Venezuela, following the devastating earthquake that struck the country and caused great loss of life and considerable material damage.
The news was announced by the Vatican, which explained that the fund has been made available by the Office of the Apostolic Exhortations, the institution of the Holy See that deals with the Pope's charitable works and the support of populations affected by natural disasters.
According to Vatican News, the sum of 100,000 euros constitutes an "initial contribution", intended to support humanitarian operations and relief efforts for residents affected by the disaster.
Venezuela was hit overnight by two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale. According to preliminary estimates, at least 164 people have died, while hundreds more have been injured or left homeless.
Aid for Venezuela has not come only from the Holy See. Several countries and international organizations have also offered humanitarian support, including the United States, the European Union, Iran, and Cuba.
The natural disaster has struck a country that has been facing a severe economic and social crisis for years, making it even more difficult to manage the consequences of the earthquake.
