This afternoon, at around 2:30 p.m., two military aircraft landed at Benghazi airport: an Airbus VC-319A of the Italian Air Force and an Embraer ERJ-135LR of the Greek Air Force. Both aircraft originated from Tripoli, Libya.
On board were the Interior Ministers of Italy and Greece. The European Union Commissioner for Migration was also present, while the Maltese Interior Minister reportedly arrived on a special plane.
Upon their arrival in Benghazi, the planned visit was suddenly canceled by the Libyan government, which also ordered the delegations to immediately leave the country, declaring them undesirable.
A strong official statement was issued by the Libyan government, which states: “ The Libyan government reiterates to all diplomats and members of international missions and organizations the obligation to respect Libya’s sovereignty. This must be done through full compliance with Libyan legislation, international treaties, diplomatic protocols and international norms governing diplomatic visits .”
According to her, such visits should be coordinated in advance with the Libyan government and carried out in full compliance with applicable legal and international standards.
“ Regarding the violations committed by the Ministers of the Interior of Italy, Greece and Malta, as well as the EU Commissioner for Migration: the conduct of these officials constitutes a clear violation of diplomatic norms and international agreements, a blatant lack of respect for Libya’s national sovereignty and a violation of Libyan laws, in particular the procedures governing the entry and stay of foreign diplomats, as defined by circulars issued by the Libyan government.
"The planned visit of the Ministers of the Interior of the Republics of Italy, Greece and Malta, as well as the EU Commissioner for Migration, has therefore been cancelled. These delegations were asked to leave Libyan territory immediately upon their arrival at Benina International Airport in Benghazi and were informed of the need to leave without delay, as their presence was considered undesirable ," it added.
At around 4:45 p.m., the plane then departed Benghazi.
The order was issued by the Government of National Stability (GNS), the rival of the internationally recognized Government of National Unity (GNU).
The GNA controls the city of Benghazi and eastern Libya, even if in reality power is held by the military dictatorship of Khalifa Haftar. The GNA controls Tripoli and the West.
