Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has commented on the drone incidents over airports in EU countries, saying that it remains a mystery who is behind this disturbing wave, but the incidents are a useful reminder to Europeans about the dangers of war.
Medvedev, now deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, downplayed the theory that recent disruptions, including those to air traffic over airports in Germany and Denmark, were the result of actions linked to Russia or forces affiliated with it.
The former Russian president, who has been harsh against the West, said the main thing is, regardless of who is responsible, that European citizens have tasted what the war could mean for the European continent, which he said is being ignited by French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for political and economic reasons.
"The main thing is that short-sighted Europeans feel the danger of war on their own skin. That they are afraid and tremble like dumb animals in a herd being led to the slaughter," Medvedev said, adding that he hopes the world can turn against Merz and Macron.
The debate in Europe over the use of frozen Russian assets to finance arms purchases for Ukraine, along with discussions about shooting down Russian drones that roam European airspace and plans to build an "anti-drone wall," has already angered Russian government officials who have repeatedly said they have no intention of attacking any NATO member state.
