Iran has intensified attacks on Iranian Kurdish opposition groups based in northern Iraq, at a time when speculation is growing that these organizations could be involved in a possible confrontation inside Iranian territory.
According to reports from the ground, one of the opposition bases was hit by a ballistic missile at around 11:00 local time. Four Kurdish Peshmerga fighters were injured in the explosion, while one of them later died from his wounds.
At the site of the attack, the missile had left a large crater in the ground. A building had been completely destroyed, while the surrounding area was covered in rubble and metal debris scattered over a wide area.
Another base, belonging to the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI), was hit by a double drone attack the day before, injuring one civilian, according to local sources.
A senior political leader of the KDPI said he believes Kurdish forces could soon be involved in fighting inside Iran, although he did not give a specific timeframe. He did not comment on reports that US President Donald Trump had held talks with the leader of the organization in recent days.
Among the fighters at the base, the atmosphere was tense but also filled with anticipation. Hassan, a 25-year-old fighter armed with an AK-47 assault rifle, said he was ready to return to Iran to fight.
"We are closer than ever," he said, adding that their goal is "the freedom and rights of their nation."
The latest attacks show that tensions over the Kurdish issue are becoming an increasingly important element in the regional crisis, as Iran tries to curb the activity of opposition groups along its western border.
