Iran has begun charging transit fees to some commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, in another sign of Tehran's control over one of the most important sea lanes for global energy.

According to Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the matter, fees of up to $2 million per trip are being demanded on a case-by-case basis, effectively creating a kind of informal toll for crossing this waterway.

The same sources said that some ships have made these payments, although the exact mechanism is not yet clear, including the currency used. According to them, this practice does not appear to be applied uniformly to all vessels.
