Explosions were heard in Jerusalem after a wave of air raid warnings were activated in several Israeli cities, while the Israeli military reported missile launches from Iran and drone attacks from Lebanon.
According to AFP journalists, sirens sounded several times in Jerusalem during the afternoon, with four alarms in less than three hours. Several explosions were also heard after air defense systems were activated, believed to be the result of missile interceptions.
Israeli police said they had deployed forces to five different areas in the Jerusalem region after reports of fragments from intercepted rockets fell. Some material damage was reported, but there was no immediate word on casualties.
Alarm sirens were also heard in Tel Aviv, the main city in the center of the country, as well as in Haifa and several other areas in northern Israel.
The Israeli military said it had identified missiles launched from Iran and that air defense systems were activated to “intercept the threat.” At the same time, several drones were reported to have been launched from Lebanon, near Israel’s northern border, which the military said were “mostly intercepted.”
Meanwhile, according to security sources, alarm sirens were also heard inside the United States embassy in Baghdad, the Iraqi capital, in another indication of high tensions in the region.
The developments come at a time of escalating conflict in the Middle East, with continued exchanges of attacks between Iran and Israel and the involvement of other regional actors in the growing conflict.
