Israel has called on the United Nations Security Council to declare Iran's Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization, accusing Tehran of actions that it says threaten regional stability and international security.
The request was formulated by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar, who reacted on the social network X by emphasizing that the recent activities of the Iranian regime indicate a direct danger not only to Israel, but also to peace in the Middle East.
Sa'ar called for the Islamic Republic to be clearly condemned by the international community and for the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, also known as the Pasdaran, to be officially declared a terrorist organization by the UN Security Council.
His statement comes at a time of high tensions in the region, as Israel and Iran continue to clash indirectly through allies and armed groups on several fronts in the Middle East. Israel accuses Tehran of financially and militarily supporting organizations such as Hezbollah in Lebanon, Shiite militias in Iraq and Syria, and the Houthi movement in Yemen.
The conflict has intensified since the outbreak of war in Gaza following Hamas's attack on Israel in October 2023, an event that has raised fears of a wider regional escalation. Israeli authorities argue that the Revolutionary Guard plays a key role in coordinating and supplying weapons to groups operating against Israel in the region.
The Revolutionary Guard was established after the 1979 Islamic Revolution and constitutes one of the most powerful military and political institutions in Iran. In addition to its role in protecting the Iranian political system, it has a major influence on military operations abroad through its elite force, known as the Quds Force.
The United States designated the Revolutionary Guards a terrorist organization in 2019, including them on its list of foreign terrorist organizations. According to international reports, the European Union also took steps in the same direction in January, following the violent suppression of mass protests against the Iranian government.
However, such a decision in the Security Council would require consensus among major powers, including veto-wielding members, making the process politically complex. The debate over Iran's role in regional conflicts and the activities of the Revolutionary Guard remains one of the most sensitive issues in international diplomacy.
The Iranian regime's recent actions underscore that its aggression constitutes a direct threat not only to Israel, but to regional and international peace and security. I urge the UN Security Council to condemn Iran and immediately designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization.… pic.twitter.com/d1IZK6bQQh
