Spain's Supreme Court on Monday sentenced former Transport Minister Jose Luis Abalos to 24 years in prison for corruption, in the first judicial ruling in a series of scandals that have affected the ruling Socialist Party.

The court found Abalos guilty of several criminal offenses, including participation in a criminal organization, bribery, embezzlement of public funds and exercising illegal influence. The charges relate to the manipulation of public contracts for medical supplies, such as protective masks, during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he held the post of minister.

His assistant, Koldo Garcia, was sentenced to 19 years in prison.

Businessman Víctor de Aldama received a four-and-a-half-year sentence, but the court suspended the execution of the prison sentence due to his cooperation in uncovering the scheme. The conditions of the suspension include not committing any other criminal offenses, submitting activity reports every six months, and performing one year of community service.

The trial is one of several corruption cases involving people in the inner circle of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. Sánchez, one of the few left-wing leaders still in power in Europe, came to power eight years ago after toppling a center-right government embroiled in corruption scandals, promising reforms to clean up political life.

Although he faces criticism from some political allies, Sánchez's name has not been mentioned in any of these cases. The prime minister has stated that the investigations and accusations are part of a political campaign aimed at removing him from power.
