70 kg of cannabis was found in her home, the mayor is arrested in France

A mayor of a municipality in France has been arrested by the police after 70 kg of cannabis were discovered during a search of her apartment.

The mayor of Avallon Jamilah Habsaoui, her two brothers and 4 other people were taken into custody.

Foreign media write that the operation against drug trafficking was launched on Sunday by an operational group in Avallon.

In some of the locations where checks were carried out, 983 grams of cocaine, 7,000 euros in cash and about 20 gold bars were seized.

The 46-year-old was elected mayor in March 2021 after previously being a councilor in the municipality. In addition to her home, operations were also carried out at her workplace as well as at a pharmacy.

Avallon, which has 6,000 inhabitants, is one of the two sub-prefectures of Yonne, included in the Morvan Regional Natural Park.
