German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has opened an account on TikTok. Scholz becomes the latest Western leader to join the Chinese-owned social media platform, despite widespread security concerns and misinformation concerns.

promising not to be seen dancing on the social media platform popular with the youth.

In a statement, Scholz's spokesman, Steffen Hebestreit, said that the newest official government channel increases the information offer to citizens, who are increasingly informed and discuss politics on TikTok.

Known for his measured leadership style, the chancellor himself dismissed the new extension on another social media channel.

" I will not dance. I promise ," Scholz told X.

Hebestreit said it was "coincidental" that the account opening came days before Scholz's visit to China this weekend. He also said Scholz's office had taken time to evaluate the platform before signing up.

We recall that Joe Biden opened an account in February, at the time of this year's presidential elections in the USA, in an effort to reach younger voters. Biden's presence on the channel, however, did not prevent him from raising concerns about ownership of the platform with Chinese leader Xi Jinping during a phone call this month.
