Israel Justifies Attack on Gaza Hospital: We Saw Hamas Cameras

The Israeli military (IDF) today published the first findings from its internal investigation into yesterday's attack on Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza, where, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry, 20 people were killed, including five journalists.

According to the IDF, Israeli troops had “identified a camera placed by Hamas” near the hospital, which was used to “monitor the movements of soldiers.” The military did not provide concrete evidence for this claim, but said the conclusion was also related to “the repeated use of hospitals for military purposes by terrorist organizations during the war.”

The IDF said six of those killed were "armed fighters," while the rest were civilians.

Army: Militants, not civilians, were the target

In a statement, the chief of general staff said that "the Israeli army only targets military targets," but added that it "regrets any harm caused to civilians."

The full investigation will focus on two areas:

-the authorization process prior to the attack, including the type of ammunition used and the moment when permission for the strike was given;

-decision-making on the ground by commanders.

The attack on the hospital has sparked a fierce international outcry. Human rights organizations have called the attack on a health facility "unacceptable," while several Western countries have called for an independent investigation and legal accountability.

Meanwhile, the Israeli government insists that Hamas uses hospitals and civilian facilities as military shields, presenting this as justification for attacks that have produced numerous casualties among the population.
