After Gaza, Israel takes the war to the West Bank.
The defense forces are carrying out there what they have called a major anti-terrorist operation, simultaneously targeting several towns in the occupied territory.
In the early hours of Thursday, security forces said they had killed 5 armed terrorists who were hiding in a mosque in the town of Tulkarm. According to them, the head of a local terrorist organization in Nur Shams, Muhamad Jabber, was also killed in the armed clash.
A day earlier, at least 9 Palestinians were killed during Israeli military strikes in the towns of Jenin, Tulkarm, Nablus and Tubas where hospitals, refugee camps and other civilian infrastructure were targeted.
With the war in Gaza still raging, Israel's biggest operation in the West Bank in 20 years is causing international alarm. The head of the UN, Antonio Guterres, described the Israeli operation as extremely disturbing and demanded that it be stopped immediately.
While the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell spoke about the possibility of sanctions against Israeli ministers.
"I have started the procedures to ask the member states if they consider it appropriate to place on the sanctions list some Israeli ministers who are conveying messages of hatred against the Palestinians and are proposing things that violate international law."
Borrell warned against expanding the war in Gaza to the West Bank. The US also asked Israel to take all necessary measures to protect civilian lives in the West Bank.
