A video of Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir has caused strong reactions in Israel.
In the footage that went viral, the far-right leader is seen walking excitedly through the Knesset corridors with a tray of sweets, offering them to colleagues to celebrate the approval in first reading of the law that provides for the death penalty for terrorists.
“The 'Jewish Power' party is on the right track to making history,” Ben Gvir wrote on the X platform, also publishing a video of the celebration. The bill, proposed by MP Limor Son Har-Melech, was approved last night with 39 votes in favor and 16 against.
It provides for the death penalty for those who kill Israelis "for reasons of racism" and "with the aim of harming the State of Israel and the rebirth of the Jewish people in its land."
Opponents have called the text discriminatory, as they say it will only apply to Arabs who kill Jews and not to Jewish terrorists.
Although the death penalty formally exists in Israel, it has only been carried out once, in 1962, against Adolf Eichmann, one of the architects of the Holocaust.
