The United States is planning to establish a large military base in Israel, near the border with Gaza, for international forces operating in the Strip to maintain the ceasefire.
The base could accommodate several thousand soldiers and would cost about $500 million, the sources said. In recent weeks, the Americans have been working to advance the issue with the Israeli government and the IDF and have begun evaluating potential sites. A security official told Israeli media that the move represents a significant shift for Israel, which has traditionally sought to minimize international involvement in territories under its control, and underscores Washington’s determination to take an active role in Gaza and the conflict.
The United States has already established the Civil-Military Monitoring Center in Kiryat Gat, in southern Israel, to monitor the ceasefire in force in Gaza and oversee the entry of humanitarian aid into the Strip.
