Excavating the Gaza Strip has become a lucrative business for Israeli civilians. Those who use heavy machinery to demolish homes and infrastructure can earn up to 30,000 shekels a month, roughly $9,000, according to an investigation by the Israeli newspaper The Marker, which gathered testimony from several bulldozer operators.
This is an aspect overlooked by the international press, but well documented by the Tel Aviv newspapers: Israeli civilians and demolition companies, commissioned by the Ministry of Defense, are playing an active role in the complete destruction of the Gaza Strip. The Times of Israel writes: "Although officially non-combatants, many civilians now operate on the front lines, taking risks normally reserved for uniformed soldiers. They regularly carry out demolition, engineering and logistical work in the heart of Gaza."
Thus, it is not only the IDF operating in the Strip, but also Israeli civilians operating in parallel, in a coordinated effort.
According to reports, there are essentially two types of price lists approved by the Israeli Ministry of Defense. In the first, less lucrative one, the ministry pays companies that provide bulldozers approximately $1,500 per day. In the second, the payment is linked to the number of demolitions completed: for a three-story building, operators receive $750, while for taller structures the figure increases to $1,500. In other words, the more demolitions they carry out, the higher the profits. As for machine operators, they can earn up to a daily wage of $882 (The Guardian).
" It's also a matter of time. Vehicle owners know they can increase their income, so they hire motivated Israelis ," The Marker writes.
It is no surprise, then, that online advertisements for these positions are filled mainly by young Israelis who, beyond the financial aspect, declare that their actions are guided by one ideal: "to contribute to the total destruction of Gaza." Many of them are settlers, that is, Israelis who live in the occupied West Bank and dream of making the Gaza Strip their own.
Recruitment of settlers
This week, during a demolition operation in Khan Younis, Avraham Azoulay, a settler from Yitzhar, was killed in a clash between the Israeli army and Hamas fighters. The Religious Zionist Party, led by Minister Bezalel Smotrich, did not hesitate to praise his death in an official statement: "Azoulay came to Rafah and demolished many buildings in the name of the State of Israel. He died a hero, while destroying the homes of the enemy."
In May, when another settler was killed while driving a bulldozer, MK Tzvi Sukkot (Religious Zionism) awarded him a kind of bravery medal, calling him responsible for “the greatest achievement of the war: the destruction of tens of thousands of homes.” On that occasion, the messianic leader himself encouraged the settler movement to continue serving in Gaza by driving bulldozers.
Among these "serial destroyers" stands out Rabbi Avraham Zarbib, a settler from Beit El, who has become a sensation on social media thanks to videos he posts of himself destroying homes in Gaza. "We will destroy this cursed village until the end, until victory, until settlement," he declared in one of his latest videos shot in Khan Younis. Each video is accompanied by the slogan: "We will not give up until everything is wiped out."
Israeli journalist Uri Misgav reported that two companies operate under the umbrella of the Defense Ministry. Both have dozens of vehicles and their operators are recruited by the so-called "Hilltop Youth," Jewish extremists who dominate the occupied West Bank (and who have recently clashed with the Israeli military, such is their impunity).
Israeli civilians destroy what they want
In Gaza, everything is allowed to the Israelis: construction companies working in the enclave can (indeed, must) demolish buildings anywhere, even near areas where Palestinians are huddled together. It often happens, Haaretz reports, “that when bulldozers get too close to unarmed Palestinians, soldiers open fire, claiming that the proximity of civilians poses a danger.” This criminal modus operandi has already been used to shoot poor, hungry people waiting in lines for aid, accused of being “a potential threat.” /Adapted from “Inside Over”
