US President Donald Trump has stated that he came very close to reaching a ceasefire agreement with Vladimir Putin regarding the war in Ukraine, five times.
These statements were made during a press conference in Scotland, where Trump was in a joint meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
"I've talked a lot with President Putin, I get along very well with him," Trump said, adding, however, that he is deeply disappointed by the Russian leader's recent actions.
"Then he goes out and starts launching missiles at some city like Kiev, and kills a lot of people in some nursing home or whatever, dead bodies all over the streets ," he said.
Trump said he had given Putin 50 days to reach an agreement to end the war, but is now reconsidering that deadline. "I'm going to cut that 50-day deadline down to a smaller number because I think I already know the answer to what's going to happen," he said.
The meeting with Starmer focused on global issues such as security, the energy crisis and Ukraine, with Trump using the occasion to reiterate the role he claims to have played behind the scenes in stopping the war, while stressing that diplomacy requires decisiveness and swift action.
Trump's statements come at a time when the war in Ukraine continues without a clear solution, while international peace efforts remain fragile.
