German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he was skeptical that a deal on Ukraine could be reached by the deadline set by Trump on Thursday. He stressed that peace is a long way off.
Merz said he had made his proposal, which is currently being discussed in Geneva, on how to take at least a first step by Thursday if the 28 points are too many to cover in 5 days.
"Today is Sunday. President Trump's plan is to reach an agreement on Thursday. We are still a long way from that. That does not mean that it is completely impossible to achieve... But I am skeptical that such an outcome is possible given the current differences. The focus now should be on drafting an acceptable document for Ukraine, which can then be used to negotiate a peace agreement with Russia," Merz said.
