The Parliament of Great Britain now officially sees former Prime Minister Boris Johnson as a liar. Parliament overwhelmingly accepts the report on former Prime Minister Johnson's "Partygate" lies.

It's only a symbolic act with few direct consequences, but the message is nonetheless clear: Members of the British Parliament have approved an internal report that says former prime minister Boris Johnson lied to Parliament about parties held at his official residence. during the shutdown of public life due to the Corona virus. Johnson anticipated the 90-day suspension recommended by Parliament, and left the MP's mandate a few days ago. With this vote, the House of Commons, however, stripped him of his parliamentary passport, which former MPs are usually entitled to keep. A year ago, the conservative Johnson resigned as prime minister after the "Partygate" scandal.

Before the vote, MPs debated whether they agree with the parliamentary committee's findings and whether they support the proposed sanctions. In the end, only seven MPs from Johnson's Conservative party voted against the decision, out of 118 in favor. Most of the 352 Conservative MPs abstained - including most senior cabinet members. A total of 354 deputies voted in favor.

Criticism of Johnson's successor, Rishi Sunak

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak did not participate in the vote, which the opposition interpreted as "weakness" on his part. "If the Prime Minister is incapable of even showing leadership when it comes to holding liars to account, how can he expect the citizens of this country to trust him with anything else," said Labor MP Thangam Debbonaire. Liberal Democrat Group vice-chair Daisy Cooper criticized: "Sunaku promised integrity but when the going got tough he was too weak to show his face." Sunaku publicly refused to commit to a decision and apologized for it, saying he did not want to influence the vote.

Boris Johnson criticized the "Partygate" report and insulted the members of the commission who participated in it. According to polls, the former prime minister remains more popular than the current incumbent, Sunak, in the ranks of the Conservative Party in Britain. Many Tory members see Johnson as a gifted campaigner without whom the party would have no chance in the general elections scheduled for 2024.

Is Johnson planning a comeback?

Initially, the former prime minister is expected to harass the head of the British government anyway with noisy interventions from abroad. Shortly after his withdrawal from parliament, the conservative tabloid 'Daily Mail' announced that Johnson will now engage as a commentator./DW
