An Air India plane crashed today near Ahmedabad airport, just minutes after takeoff on a flight bound for London. Flight AI171, which was en route to Gatwick Airport, suffered a fatal accident, causing a serious tragedy.
There were 242 people on board, including 230 passengers, 10 crew members and 2 pilots. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into a medical dormitory near the airport, causing significant damage and multiple fatalities, although the exact toll has not yet been officially confirmed. Initial reports indicate many dead.
According to local authorities, emergency teams immediately arrived at the scene and search and rescue operations are ongoing. No weather problems were reported at the time of the plane's takeoff, which has led experts to suspect multiple bird strikes as a possible cause of the crash.
Flight expert Marco Chan confirmed that the weather was good and there were no climatic factors that would have affected the incident. Meanwhile, former pilot Saurabh Bhatnagar stressed that a bird strike could have damaged both engines, causing the plane to lose power shortly after takeoff. The pilot of the plane had issued an emergency "Mayday" signal before the crash.
Aviation analyst Sanjay Lazar added that the Dreamliner model, only 11 years old, had no history of serious technical problems, making a bird strike the most likely scenario.
This is the first crash of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner in 14 years of operation. The plane has been among the most reliable in the airline industry and its crash is a serious blow to Boeing, which is already facing other challenges due to incidents with the 737 MAX model.
Investigations to determine the full causes of the tragedy are ongoing.
