German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that Germany has no intention of developing its own nuclear weapons, but wants to open discussions with France and the United Kingdom about expanding their nuclear defenses towards Germany.
"I do not want Germany to consider developing its own nuclear weapons," Merz said, stressing that Berlin remains committed to the existing security architecture.
According to him, the idea is to discuss a mechanism similar to the American "nuclear umbrella" within NATO, through which the US guarantees strategic protection for European allies.
Merz announced that he has proposed opening a dialogue with the French president, describing the process as still in its embryonic stage.
Merz's statements come at a time when debates over Europe's strategic autonomy have intensified, due to uncertainties over the long-term US commitment to the continent and ongoing tensions with Russia.
France is the only nuclear power within the European Union following Britain's exit from the EU, while the United Kingdom remains a key pillar of nuclear deterrence in Europe.
In this context, Berlin appears to be exploring alternatives to strengthen European security without violating international commitments against the proliferation of nuclear weapons.
