US President Donald Trump has canceled the US delegation's trip to Islamabad at the last minute, deepening signals that negotiations with Iran for a ceasefire are at a standstill.
In a statement to Fox News, Trump made it clear that he sees no reason to continue diplomatic efforts at this stage. “ I told my people who were preparing to leave: ‘No, you’re not going to take an 18-hour flight to get there. We have all the cards. They can call us anytime they want, but you’re not going to take any more long flights to talk about anything,’ ” he said.
The US delegation was expected to be led by White House special envoy Steve Witkoff, along with Jared Kushner. The visit was aimed at reaching out to Iranian representatives to advance a ceasefire in the escalating conflict.
However, developments on the ground indicate a deep diplomatic deadlock. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has left Pakistan ahead of the arrival of the US delegation, in a move that signals continued tensions between the two countries.
Tehran has clearly ruled out the possibility of direct talks in Islamabad. "The two delegations will not hold direct talks in Islamabad," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said.
During his stay in Pakistan, Araghchi held meetings with the country's leaders, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who described the meeting as a "well-thought-out" exchange in a "warm and cordial" atmosphere. According to media reports, the Iranian minister presented Tehran's position on the ceasefire and the end of the war, also highlighting developments in the region, including the situation in Lebanon.
Iran has set clear conditions for any progress: lifting the US naval blockade of Iranian ports, stopping military threats and ending the war, as well as rejecting demands it considers excessive, including a complete cessation of uranium enrichment.
On the other hand, Pakistani mediators appear pessimistic about the progress of the process, signaling that the possibility of a peace agreement at this stage remains limited.
In this context, Trump's cancellation of the visit is seen as a confirmation of the current diplomatic deadlock, with the parties remaining far from a compromise and with tensions continuing to dominate the international scene.
