"Nord", worth around $500 million, sails on one of the most strategically sensitive routes in the world
A luxury yacht linked to a sanctioned Russian oligarch passed through the Strait of Hormuz today, according to maritime tracking data.
It is about the “Nord” (IMO: 9853785), a superyacht about 142 meters long, considered among the largest in the world. According to data from the maritime intelligence provider MarineTraffic, the ship departed yesterday evening from Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, and during the night passed through this strategic corridor, heading towards Muscat in Oman.
According to previous reports, the yacht is estimated to be worth at least $500 million and is widely believed to belong to Alexey Mordashov, one of Russia's richest billionaires and the chairman of a steel and mining giant. The Associated Press has reported that the vessel is owned by him.
The Nord, about one and a half times the size of an American football field, appears to have followed a route that passes near the Iranian island of Larak. According to Lloyd's List Intelligence, this is a route used by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to control access to the Strait of Hormuz.
Mordashov has been placed under sanctions by the US State Department in 2022, along with three of his companies, his wife and two adult children, according to previous CNN reports.
The yacht "Nord" is equipped with two helipads and usually has an extensive staff on board, including a permanent chef, fitness instructor and massage therapist, according to a yacht broker interviewed by CNN.
It remains unclear whether the movement of this superyacht will be affected by the US military presence in the region, including the naval blockade that, according to US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, is "expanding and taking on global proportions."
