540 kilograms of cocaine worth over 100 million euros was seized in Catania, Italy by the neighboring Police.
As a result of the operation of the Italian police, 5 people, whose identity has not yet been revealed, have been arrested.
The suspects were on a fishing boat and were transporting the narcotics, which were in packages packed to avoid water penetration.
The operation coordinated by the Prosecutor's Office of the capital Etna was carried out by soldiers of the Provincial Command of Catania in collaboration with financiers from the air and sea operational departments of Palermo and Pratica di Mare.
The operation carried out by the specialized units of the Economic-Financial Police unit of Catania, came as a result of the monitoring of traffic and trade routes at sea by the Department of Finance to identify possible or suspicious anomalies and to activate specific controls on targets that appear.
In this context, a daily check was carried out in the stretch of sea between the provinces of Catania and Ragusa, which made it possible to detect, among other things, the abnormal movements of a trawler that was picking up packages floating in the water.
During the search, 18 packages were found on the boat, weighing approximately 30 kg each, packed to avoid water penetration and tied to prevent it from sinking. According to the investigators, the cargo of narcotics was thrown into the sea by one of the cargo ships circulating in that area of the coast to be found later and transported to the mainland with the so-called "drop off" system.
The operation, which was coordinated by the Catania District Prosecutor's Office, led to the seizure of 450 packages with a total weight of approximately 540 kilograms.
The police who carried out the operation arrested five members of the crew of the boat, four Italians and one Serbian, under investigation for production, trafficking and illegal possession of narcotics or psychotropic substances, aggravated by the large amount.
The arrests and seizure were confirmed by the investigating magistrate of Catania. According to the estimates of the Financial Police, the seized drugs, which were intended to supply Sicilian drug trafficking centers, would bring traffickers profits of over 100 million euros.
