A cathedral in France is engulfed in flames as footage shows plumes of black smoke filling the sky.
The spire of Notre-Dame de Rouen Cathedral in Normandy was gutted by fire on Thursday as emergency services rushed to the scene, Rouen Mayor Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol said.
"The origin of the fire is unknown at this stage. All public resources have been mobilized. Thank you for facilitating their intervention," he said.
The cathedral's footprints were undergoing works involving large scaffolding structures on site.
"The construction site is complex because of this height with very large scaffolding structures," said Ouest Richard Duplat, chief architect from Historic Monuments.
