One of the meetings that attracted attention at the NATO summit was undoubtedly the one between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, their fifth meeting in the last 12 months.
The two leaders left together from the hall where the heads of NATO member countries had gathered and walked side by side to the place where the meeting took place in the presence of foreign ministers Giorgos Gerapetritis and Hakan Fidan as well as their diplomatic advisers.
Although Ankara has not moved from its position on the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean, Athens considers very important the fact that in the last 16 months there has been calm on the air and sea border between the two neighbors who have often arrived one step away from military conflict.
Responding to the latest challenge of President Erdogan, who has recently referred to the issue of recognizing the Turkish pseudo-state in Northern Cyprus, a few days before the visit he is planning to the occupied territories, Mitsotakis has stated that 50 years after the tragedy of 1974, Cyprus , an EU member state, cannot remain divided and reiterated the need to resume talks to resolve this issue based on UN decisions.
According to Greek government sources, Prime Minister Mitsotakis expressed satisfaction with the cooperation with the Turkish authorities in the fight against irregular immigration. They agreed on the intensification of cooperation to double the volume of bilateral trade as well as on the mutual benefits that the two countries will have if a climate of calm is maintained in the relations between them.
For its part, the announcement of the Directorate of Communication of the Turkish Presidency emphasizes that during the meeting, relations between Turkey and Greece, regional and global issues were discussed. President Erdogan has stated that "Turkey continues its efforts to develop a spirit of solidarity with Greece based on the principle of good neighborliness and that these efforts will continue to grow."
Mitsotakis and Erdogan also talked about their next meeting that will be held in September in New York, in the proceedings of the UN General Assembly, where it is estimated that they will discuss deeper issues and the divisions between them, among others. the definition of the EEZ and the continental shelf.
